The Call of Simon the Fisherman (Lk 5:1-11)

Once a disciple asked to his spiritual master, “How can I know that I am growing spiritually?” The Mater answered, “If you could feel the darkness within you more and more you are nearing the Supreme Light”. Today’s gospel is the revelation of Simon about his darkness of mind when he experienced Jesus the Supreme Light.

In all the vocation stories in Bible we see the element of admitting the unworthiness of the disciple in front of God. The more we get closer to Him the more we feel the necessity to be cleansed. It is the result of the emotional closeness to God.

This feeling of unworthiness guides a disciple to a total dedication to the Divine Will. We see in this gospel that peter, after admitting his unworthiness, left everything and followed Jesus. It is a total surrender to the Will of God that has the ability to cleanse the disciple. Let us pray that we may have that divine experience to know more about ourselves so that we will be humble enough and surrender everything at His Feet.
