24th Sunday of Ordinary Time (B) Peter’s Confession about Jesus (Mk: 27-35)

Jesus’ Mid-term Examination

Introduction

-          Exams are common to a student life. In UP the student life usually starts with UPCAT exam and ends with comprehensive exam and the thesis.
-          Mid term exams are meant for knowing the progress of the student in the middle of their studies. If the student fails the kind professors give them a second chance.
-          Today’s gospel is the midterm exam of Jesus. The students were his disciples. There were two parts for the exam – theoretical and practical.
o   Theoretical part had two questions – “who do people say that I am” and “who do you say that I am”
§  The answers were perfect and peter got 100% score.
o   Practical question was – their response to the passion narrative of Jesus.
§  The answer was wrong and peter got 0% in that with scolding of Jesus as ‘satan’
-          Jesus was kind enough to give another chance to peter.
o   In John 21, Jesus asked peter ‘do you love me more than these’ (Jn 21:15). But he failed by rejecting Jesus three times before the down.
o   Jesus gave the chances again and Peter used the chance and scored 100%. “He wept bitterly” (Mt 26: 75). He never failed in any further exams of Jesus. He even gave his life for Jesus.

Content

-          We all score 100% for the theoretical exams, but for practical we often fail.
-          Jesus gives us a clue for our practical exams, which is to live Jesus in our lives, that is “deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me” (Mk 8: 34).
o   Deny yourself
§  It is dying to the SELF – everything in our life is the blessings of God. It is showered upon us not on our merits but because of the mercy of God.
§  We are the stewards of the blessings and therefore have an obligation to share it with our brethren.
o   Take up your cross
§  We live in a world where people try to run away or avoid crosses. The increased number of divorces, abandoned elders etc. points to that reality of ‘avoiding the crosses’.
§  We live in a culture of ‘sun shades and ear phones’ in order to avoid the situation and others.
§  Our crosses can be our family members, partners, children, co-worker or any essential situations of life. (story of a lady who considered her husband as her cross. When the retreat preacher said to lift a cross for blessing - she failed to do so because ‘he is so heavy’)
o   Follow me
§  It is a call to obey the teachings and examples of Jesus.
§  It is an invitation to be another Christ in our life.

Conclusion

-          We all are good in our theoretical exam results. We profess by word our faith in Jesus especially on Sunday liturgy.
-          God asks us to score 100% in our practical exams by ‘denying oneself, taking up the cross of everyday life, and following Jesus.

Additional story
The story is told of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson on a camping trip. As they lay sleeping one night, Holmes woke Watson and said, "Watson, look up into the sky and tell me what you see." Watson said, "I see millions of stars." Holmes asked, "And what does that tell you?" Watson replied, "Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Theologically, it tells me that God is great and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it tells me that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. And what does it tell you?" Holmes answered, "Someone stole our tent." Some people are great at speculative knowledge but when it comes to its implication for practical living they score zero. Such is Peter in today's gospel.

23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time (B) – The Healing of a Deaf Man (Mk 7:31-37)

Lord, heal my Closed Self

Introduction

-          The story of a person who disconnected his mobile around seven times while we were conversing. The reason was he did not like to the person who was calling. He want to close his ears to the caller.
-          Closing our eyes and ears towards others is so common in today’s world. We live in a ‘sun glass’ and ‘ear phone’ culture. There are people who wear dark shades so that he/she can hide or close himself to people near to him. He uses ear phones so that he can avoid the voices of his neighbor.
-          The message of Jesus is clear – Ephphatha – be opened.

Content

-          Why do we close our eyes and ears to others? It can be because of the following reasons:
o   Fear of challenge or threat
§  When I see others higher than me in many ways I feel I am challenged or threatened. So I do not want to see them or hear them.
o   Pride
§  I am holding a high position and have a high profile job. So why should I listen to those silly people. I will contact only those who are equal to me.
o   To hide
§  I want to hide myself from others. I want to keep secrets about me from others because if they know my real self they would not love me. So, cover myself with deafness and blindness. I do not want to be open.
o   Lack of courage
§  I do not want to face the reality. I am fearful of tomorrow. So I pretend to be deaf and dumb.
o   Unhealed wounds
§  I want to avoid him because he caused me lot of pain. He is an enemy of mine. I do not want to talk to him anymore.
-          Even though Jesus wants to heal us, we close ourselves intentionally. Here even Jesus feels helplessness because he respects human freedom.
-          If we want to be healed let us have the following in our life
o   Desire to open
§  The people brought the deaf man to Jesus. It must be the wish of the deaf man that made the people to bring him to Jesus.
§  They begged him to cure him. Their begging is the voice of the voiceless dumb man.
o   To be away from the crowd
§  Jesus took him away from the crowd
§  It is to be with Jesus and listen to his voice.
§  The crowd and its noise can be a hindrance for our spiritual growth. We need time to be with Jesus to enjoy his love and healing.
o   Allow Jesus to do his will
§  He allowed Jesus to do whatever He likes.
§  It is a complete surrender to the divine will.
§  As Mary prayed, ‘let thy will be done in my life’.

Conclusion

-          Are we still enjoying the closeness? Do we still need to be away from our brothers and sisters?
-          If we want to enjoy the real freedom and love of God, let us pray to Jesus to utter the word Ephphatha looking at me. Let us have the desire to be open, to move away from the crowd to spend time with Jesus, and surrender ourselves for divine action.

22nd Sunday of Ordinary times (B) Tradition of Cleaning (Mk 7: 1-23)

Cleanse your SELF

Introduction

-          The Jews were particular about the cleansing the body. Why they were so particular about that? First of all they were travelling and living in a deserted place. So cleansing from the dust must be very important from them. It became a tradition and then a law.
-          We use alcohol to cleanse our hands and it is a habit that we carry small bottles of spirit with us while we travel.
-          Jesus is much concerned with internal purity than external.

Content

-          According to Jesus if you are internal self/being is pure you would produce good fruits. If it is bad it would produce the fruits such as – evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly (Mk 7: 21).
-          (Mt 7: 18) – ‘The good tree produces good fruit and bad tree produces bad fruits’. Therefore, washing does not make a fruit good or bad, but the tree.
-          We are plants that are planted in God’s garden through the sacrament of baptism and we are supposed to produce good fruits.
-          Unlike the real trees that do not have a chance to improve, we are given chances to improve ourselves – trees, so that our fruits would be good.
-          How can we become good trees or improve ourselves?
o   Observance of the commandments.
§  10 commandment.
§  5 commandments of catholic church
1.      To keep Sundays and Holy Days of obligation, by attending Mass and resting from servile work.
2.      Go to confession at least once a year.
3.      To receive the Blessed Sacrament at least once a year at Easter time.
4.      To keep days of fasting and abstinence as regulated by the Church
a.       Fasting – ash Wednesday and good Friday
b.      Abstinence from meat on all the Friday’s of Lent and good Friday.
5.      To contribute to the support the church.
o   Prayer life
§  Sacramental life
§  Personal prayers
·         Vocal prayer
·         Mental prayer
o   Disciplined life
§  Avoid a lazy life style.
§  Senses’ discipline must be observed.
o   Practicing virtues like faith, hope and charity
§  Through these virtues we grow into holiness.

Conclusion

-          We are called to be people with internal purity. By obeying the commandments, by our prayer life, by our disciplined way of life, and practice of virtues let us cleanse ourselves.
-          Let us be the trees that produce good fruits always.
