Holy Family (Lk 2:41-52)

Holy Family, a Challenge to our Families.

Introduction

-          There is a picture in our mind about a family. It may be different according to persons and time.
o   In the last century family means – working husband, house wife doing the domestic works and raring the children, and 10-12 children. Family prayer and family meal were essential part of the families,.
o   The present concept would be – working mother, house husband (housband), 1-3 children. No time for coming together.
-          The new trends that are developing in the families.
o   Working parents – husband and wife are working, may be in different shifts that they do not come together in home. No time to spend together.
o   Families are often office extensions.
o   The children are left at the mercy of caretakers.
o   The time pass of the children are internet, computer, and television.
o   No family prayer or coming together. Family re-unions are needed for a family to come together, that is usually arranged with previous appointments.
o   Some people even think in a post-modern way, ‘why should I have a permanent partner?’
-          In these new trends of family life Holy Family challenges us to build happy and holy families. Holy Family challenges our families to be;
o   Concerned with others
o   Listen
o   Silence and communication

Content

-          Concerned with other members of the family
o   St Joseph was concerned about Mary. He did not to put Mary into shame. He was concerned about her dignity.
o   Mary and Joseph were concerned about Jesus and that is why they went back to Jerusalem and searched him for three days.
o   We may think whether they were careless to lose Jesus in Jerusalem. This doubt will be removed if we know the background of that incident.
§  Jewish male child gets the status of man at the age of 12, after their rituals and celebrations in the temple. Jesus was a child while going to Jerusalem and was with the group of women, with Mary. But after the ritual in the temple he was declared as a man and supposed to join in the male group for the return journey. Joseph might have thought that since Jesus was with Mary while going to Jerusalem he also would return with his mother, while Mary might have through that he is already a man and so he will be with his father in the male group.
o   We sometimes sacrifice 'concern' for  the concept of individual freedom. It can destroy the families.
-          Listen
o   All of us want to talk and there is a lack of listeners in the families.
o   A wisdom saying tells that in the first six months the husband speaks and the wife listens; in the next six months the wife speaks and the husband listens; and after that both of them speak and the neighbors listen.
o   Listening not only includes what they say by words but also what they say in their heart.
o   Mary and Joseph listened to Jesus. Jesus listened to his parents.
-          Communication and silence
o   Silence is the quality time that we spend with God. Silence makes us realize the plan of God for us and our family. As Joseph knew the plans of God in a dream, when he was in silence we too spend time in silence.
o   Mary received the message of God through angel Gabriel in the silence.
o   Lack of communication destroys the family relations. Through the couple may live in the same room with speaking anything for weeks. It may lead to the destruction of family relations.

Conclusion

-          God invites every family to be holy and happy families like that of Mary, Joseph and Jesus.
-          Be concerned with other, be good listeners, spend time in silence and believe in strength of communication. Let Holy Family be our model and inspiration.

-          Story of a child who wished for a bicycle – he received it on the last of the novena mass. He took the baby Jesus after the night vigil mass and went – parish priest were worried because the statue of baby Jesus is missing in the Crib – the child brought the statue just before the morning mass – why? – ‘I promised him a free ride in my new bicycle’.

o   Jesus became the bread of life in the Christmas to help us to attain salvation.
o   In the Eucharist, Jesus becomes bread again for our nourishment.
-          Christmas is the feast of life
o   We live in a culture of death. In everyday newspapers we read the happenings against life like massacres, gun shots, rapes, abuses, etc. In some countries the abortion is legal. Some are trying to make Euthanasia a legal act.
o   In John’s gospel we read that the Word came as the life of the world (Jn 1).
o    Jesus incarnated to destroy death, the greatest of all evil that annihilates the life itself. He overcame death through resurrection.
-          Feast of love
o   (Phil 2: 6-7) He emptied himself because of the love towards us.
o   God so loved the world that he gave his only son.

4th Sunday of Advent – Mary visits Elizabeth (Lk 1:39-45)

The method of giving the best Gift

Introduction

-          We are almost in Christmas. The gifts are given to all our friends. The last moments of preparations are usually spared for our most dear and near ones. What should be my gift to my partner/children/parents?
-          In today’s gospel we heard about Mary’s gift to Elizabeth. That was the presence of Mary. It was the most precious that Elizabeth ever got in her life. What made those moments most memorable?

Content

-          In the gift of Mary there were three elements.
o   She travelled – Destroying the distance
o   She carried baby Jesus – The presence of Jesus.
o   She went by herself – Sharing of being.
-          1. Destroying the distance
o   Mary travelled and reached the house of Elizabeth. It is an act of destroying the distance.
o   God is asking us to destroy the distance between the minds. For example, the husband and wife may stay in one room but their mind may have a big distance. They may share their physical body but their minds are very much away from each other. It can also happen in all the relations.
-          2. Carry Jesus
o   The presence of baby Jesus in the womb of Mary made the difference. They were overjoyed because of that.
o   If we go to a situation or to give a gift, make sure that there is Jesus with you, because he can transform the situations in to joyful one. He can create wine our of water.
-          3. Ready to share the being.
o   She did not buy anything to give to Elizabeth, but offered her presence.
o   Our dear ones are looking for the quality time with us.
o   It is also good to share what we have (the having). But be sure of sharing what we are (the being)

Conclusion

-          Anybody who has money can give you a expensive gift. But only a few can give themselves to others. It needs self-sacrifice, patience and grace.
-          In first Christmas God gave his gift to the world, His own son. It broke the distance between God and man, it was Jesus, and it was God’s own being. Therefore it became a perfect gift of God to us.
-          Let us imbibe the spirit of God’s gift to us on Christmas and the example of Mary.

3nd Simbang Gabi Mass – The Genealogy of Jesus (Mt 1:1-17)

Called to be Great

Introduction

-          Is there any significance in names?
o   Names contain and convey stories. Example is ‘Ali Mall’, the first mall of the Philippines that was erected in honor of boxer Muhammad Ali.
-          Genealogy contains several names and each name has a story to tell. It is narrated in the Old Testament.
o   Most of the stories follow the same pattern;
§  God’s call to greatness
§  the human fall
§  Repentance and turning back towards God.

Content

-          God calls every one to become great, to become great people.
o   We compare greatness with ‘big leaders’ such as Abraham Lincoln, Jose Rizal etc.
o   We may not be able to be like them, great leaders. But we can be great people among our family members and friends.
o   Our call is to become great among our dear and near ones by our words and deeds.
-          Can we become great?
o   Let us analyze the names given in genealogy. They were called to become great. But in course of time they all showed their weakness. But they realized their mistakes and turned to God with repenting hearts.
§  Abraham lied (Gen 12: 10-20) by saying that her wife is his sister.
§  Jacob deceived his brother (Gen 25)
§  Judah had an irregular relationship with his daughter-in-law, Tamar, that resulted to having twin sons (Gen 38).
§  David was an adulterer and a murderer (2 Sam 11)
§  Solomon had many wives and concubines.
o   When they understood the mistake were ready to repent over them, correct them and turn back to God.
-          Do you feel that you are great in the heart of your family members?
o   Story of a widow who lost her husband around 20 years back, still cherishing the beautiful memories and sharing it with others in a proud voice.
o   Story of a son who does not want to reveal his father’s name, because his father is living with another woman and has another family. For the children the father is a matter of shame.

Conclusion

-          God is calling us to be great.
-          If at all we have mistakes, God is giving us chances to return to him. Let us use them, repent over our sins and mistakes and come back to God.
-          Let us be great among our dear and near ones.
